Not because I don't think we all shouldn't help foreign countries out, just because giving out money to other countries doesn't really help anything. Each impoverished nation has individual needs and reasons for poverty that need to be addressed individually.

Who, Norcal or Bugland? Bugland made a reasonable statement, and Norcal did not. I cannot tell to whom you were directing your comment.

1. No, we do not have to help the starving, but we do.
2. Much of the money goes to prop up our allies, not help the starving.

I think both the US and all other rich countries (Canada, Japan, Western Europe, etc.) should give more to help fight poverty around the world. If you took a third of what rich countries spend on weapons of mass destruction - plus conventional weaponry like stealth bombers - then a quarter of what we spend on limosine fleets and private planes for our politicians and bureaucrats; plus what individual citizens currently spend on hard drugs like, say, heroin; and funnel it towards fighting poverty, then we might actually have a situation where children (not to mention other human beings) don't die in large numbers from starvation or easily preventable diseases. Imagine that!

I do agree with the postings about needing to fight the 'at-home' ills at well: shear another 25% off the nuclear weapons budget (how many times do we need to be able to blow up half of civilization anyway?), eliminate a few layers of bureaucracy and red tape from each of several layers of government, and we'll have billions to put into fighting homelessness, improving domestic health care, etc.

Another point the 'we give too much' arguements make is that some countries will just take aid money and Not help their people with it; tragically, in the case of some countries that's true; some would even use it for ill - propping up their own dictatorships, sponsoring terrorism, etc. and that would have to be taken into consideration, and there might not be a lot we Can do to aid those countries under the current regimes. But there are also many more countries that use their meager funds pretty well to do what they can to try and tackle enormous humanitarian crises. Malawi is a good example.

I would like to comment on the facts (and some idealism) in this blog. First, I agree with JBCA. Thank you for bringing this up.

Second, what we don't see is the tax dollars at work here at home. I can tell you why. Have you seen the hotels, cars, aircraft, luxurious accommodations that are bestowed upon our servants in D.C.? This sickens me. Our founding forefathers promoted living off of their hard earned livings. Yet, we as dumb Americans, somewhere, believe that these servants are our saviours?? We get what we ask for. If we elect the official, well, folks, that is what we live with!

If you don't have anything constructive or even rational to say, please don't say anything at all.

I suppose this is what Obama meant when he told his horde to "get in the faces of McCain supporters."

What an intelligent and responsible thing to do.

Does he support Obama's Global Poverety Act? (843 Billion dollars to ease foreign poverty)

Or are you saying that because of the war in Iraq?

I assume you are asking what the global Poverty Act is.

Basically it is a bill that Obama co-sponsered with the goal of cutting global poverty in half by 2015. The only problem is it is through giving out financial aid to the tune of 845 billion dollars more than what we already do now. Basically, we will give about 1% of our GDP to the international community so that they will think we are swell again.

We need government money to help in so many areas. Homelessness is huge. Our infrastructure is in need of repair everywhere. Government money is my money and I want more say as to who and what it goes to. Without us tax payers, there wouldn't even be government money.
